Four-thirteen a.m. Home to get some sleep, but sleep was not to be had this evening.

He was standing at the window, the glass of gin in his hand, feeling lousy for a hundred different reasons, drinking gin at four in the morning being one of them. He was going to be working again in three hours, and the chances of getting any sleep in between were minimal.

Knowing he’d have just the one, he’d poured himself a slightly bigger glass than usual, feeling a familiar self-loathing as he’d done so.

He liked Roth. He would never allow himself the thought, but she was his favourite amongst his staff. The best and most promising detective – certainly with a lot more promise than he himself had ever shown – but he also enjoyed her company more than any of the others. She was more challenging, brought something out of him that no one else did.

If he ever thought anything beyond that, anything about the attractiveness of this woman who was on his staff and who was twenty years his junior, he forcibly expelled the notion as soon as it arrived. Somewhere in his head there was a not appropriate compartment, and Buchan could open it quickly, thrust something inside, and leave it there. That’s what he told himself, at any rate.

And now she was missing, and the buck stopped at him when it came to finding her. Liddell might take on that mantle for herself, but she wasn’t in the office with Roth every day. It wasn’t on her now to pull the investigation together. It wasn’t her who’d been in charge of an investigation that had already seen two murders.

He took another drink, cursed with the taste of it, then turned away from the window, ignoring Edelman who glanced at him as he walked past the sofa. Then he went into the kitchen, tossed the rest of the drink into the sink, and went through to the bedroom, into the ensuite, and set the tap running.
